Recorded on Days of Wine and Roses–Live at the Jazz Standard, this ballad, "The Willow" prominently features baritone. It was specifically written for, and played beautifully by Scott Robinson on our recording. When I look back, the harmony is quite rich, and even now, I have a hard time analyzing exactly what I did. I wrote this piece as a dedication to Mel Lewis shortly before he died, and I always think of him when I hear it played. Frank Kimbrough and Joe Locke also recorded a lovely small group version of this piece on their album, The Willow, released on Omnitone.
