Description

Recorded on Coming About, "Waxwing" was written in 1993, shortly after I recorded Evanescence. I guess it was the first piece to be written on Coming About.

As I was making this offer's accompanying video where I talk about and analyze what I wrote, I have to say that I came to the conclusion that this might be, harmonically speaking, one of the most forward-reaching pieces that I've written in terms of sonorities. I am writing this commentary in 2017 – so it's been 25 years since – so that's sayin' something. There are minor ninths all over the place. It's pretty interesting harmony if I do say so myself, but the thing is that it's also extremely tricky for an ensemble to play. So if you wish to learn about minor ninth interval writing in a big band – the pros and cons – and I say that with a smile – this is a good piece to look at. "Waxwing" breaks every rule in the book.
