Description

Recorded on Concert in the Garden, "Pas de Deux" is the second movement of the suite, "Three Romances." Commissioned by the University of Miami, they also recorded it on their own recording called Romances.

"Pas de Deux" is ballad tempo and requires good flügel and soprano soloists. It's tricky, in that the soloists play in and out of one another, essentially trying to compose one unified statement, like two dancers. And that's the biggest challenge in this piece aside from the pacing in the rhythm section and ensemble. There's a certain level of maturity required from a group to make this piece work. It can be played on its own as a ballad, and doesn't need to be part of the suite.

I've included various interviews with the musicians who have played this. The MP3 mixed without the solos should be most useful for your improvisors. Hopefully my own video on rehearsal of this piece will also be helpful in reaching a successful performance.
